Michigan Drunk Driving Consequences

Many people arrested for drunk driving don’t understand the significance of the collateral consequences of their conviction.  Collateral consequences are those not imposed by the court or the Secretary of State, but rather are imposed by other entities such as an employer, a license agency, or even at the border when they try to cross over and gain entrance to another country.  The most significant collateral consequences are usually those that apply to your employment.  For example, anyone who is a licensed professional such as a doctor, lawyer, CPA, very often with a trade license, sometimes even something like a real-estate license can all be impacted by a drunk driving conviction. 

Employers often will impose a sanction against their employees with a drunk driving conviction and that may even include dismissal from the position.  It can be very difficult to obtain new employment afer being convicted of drunk driving.  Other collateral consequences include life insurance, an impact on a child custody situation and its important if your charged with drunk driving to discuss what collateral consequences may apply to you so that you understand before you plead guilty, what will happen to you in an event of a conviction.
